Beauty, Breakups, and a Brutal Slump: What is Going On With Vinícius Júnior?

For Real Madrid fans, the start of the 2026/2027 season has brought an unexpected source of anxiety: the steep decline in form and mounting off-pitch distractions of their Brazilian superstar, Vinícius Júnior. The winger has dominated headlines for months, but recently, the chatter has had very little to do with his footballing brilliance.

From a heavily scrutinized cosmetic procedure to a highly public relationship breakdown, here is a look at the chaotic timeline affecting Vini Jr.

The World Cup Shock and the Chin Surgery

The saga began in the summer of 2026. Following Brazil’s shocking 1-2 defeat to Norway in the World Cup Round of 16, Vinícius made a surprising decision to alter his appearance.

He underwent a cosmetic jaw harmonization and contouring procedure—involving filler injections—designed to give him a more defined jawline. The surgery immediately went viral, with the player himself reportedly admitting that his “old face is completely gone”. While aesthetic procedures are increasingly common in football, the timing of the surgery, coming so quickly after a devastating national team exit, raised eyebrows among fans and pundits who questioned his focus.

The Virginia Fonseca Relationship Drama

The fresh look initially coincided with a reconciliation. In July 2026, Vinícius officially reunited with his ex-girlfriend, Brazilian influencer and entrepreneur Virgínia Fonseca, publicly kissing at the inauguration of her new gym in Goiânia.

However, the reunion was incredibly short-lived and rapidly descended into a tabloid frenzy. By October, the relationship had completely imploded. Virgínia reportedly dumped the Real Madrid star after discovering leaked chat messages on his phone indicating he was messaging other women and attempting to arrange meetups.

The breakup was further complicated by social media rumors regarding trust and boundaries, including widespread debates over Virgínia taking a vacation with her children and her ex-partner, a situation Vinícius allegedly stated he was completely fine with before the relationship ultimately collapsed.

A Concerning Drop in Form

The off-pitch chaos appears to have severely bled into his performances at the Santiago Bernabéu. The statistics for the start of the new season paint a grim picture for a player of his caliber.

• Goals: Just 1 goal in 10 total appearances.
• Assists: 3 assists across all competitions.
• La Liga Output: In 8 domestic league matches, he is averaging 2.9 shots per game but only hitting the target 0.9 times per match, earning an average rating of just 6.9.

With just a single goal to his name in almost two months of competitive football, the Spanish media is starting to ask tough questions. For Real Madrid to maintain their dominance, they need their star winger to clear the noise, step away from the gossip columns, and rediscover the magic that made him untouchable in the first place.
